Firedancer is named after Rachel Johnson, a traveling fire dancer who found them growing in elephant dung in Kampot, Cambodia. While identified as a Panaeolus cyanescens, sequencing shows notable base pair variation, and microscopic analysis reveals unique metuloids. This means its either a distinct species or a lineage that has been growing in isolation for a long time, allowing it to evolve its own unique traits.
Firedancer is a very low maintenance variety which makes it a great choice for beginners. While it doesn’t typically produce dense flushes, the size of it’s fruit more than make up for it. They’re beautiful too. The pins have dark chocolate colored caps and then evolve into warm vanilla with rich gold centers, similar to Yellow Umbo. The prints are quite large too. Lots of spores to work with!

Cap: Medium to large (3–6 cm diameter). Pins emerge with robust, hemispherical (rounded) dark brown caps. As they mature, the caps expand into a broad bell shape and transition to a warm vanilla with a prominent, bright gold center (hygrophanous). The most striking feature is the highly undulate or ruffled margin at the cap edges.
Stem: Strikingly white, thick, and fleshy, typically ranging from 8–15 cm. This variety is much more robust than typical Panaeolus. Stems are highly reactive to oxygen, displaying deep indigo-blue bruising when handled.
Gills: Adnate to adnexed; dark greyish-black with a mottled appearance. The gill structure is notably more defined than standard varieties, which is a visual result of the unique metuloids found in this specific Cambodian lineage.
Spores: Jet black, smooth, and elliptical. Firedancer is a prolific sporulator that produces large, heavy prints.
Growth Characteristics: Hardier than most varieties with a notable tolerance for environmental fluctuations. Prioritizes individual fruit size over flush density and maintains a stable, upright but softly curved growth habit.
