These first generation prints come from a wild collection found in Marco Island, FL, by the legendary Alan Rockefeller.
They were originally identified as Panaeolus bisporus, but recent sequencing by Scott Ostuni confirms they’re actually Panaeolus cyanescens. While their growth habits are consistent with typical cyanescens, their appearance is quite unique. The mycelium bruises blue naturally, and the fruits, though average in height, are thicker and more rugged looking with their large, protruding gills.

Genus: Panaeolus
Species: P. cyanescens (aka Pan bisp)
Strain Origin: Marco Island, Florida
Climate: Tropical and subtropical
Habitat: Thrives in nutrient-rich soil, commonly found in pastures, grasslands, and areas fertilized by livestock manure.
Temp: 75°–83°F (25–28°C)
Relative Humidity: 86%–92%
Cap: Small to medium-sized (1–3 cm diameter), initially rounded and maturing to broadly bell shaped. Color starts off chocolate brown to grayish brown, fading to pale tan or gray (hygrophanous).
Stem: Slightly thicker than your average cyanescens but still slender and firm, typically between 5–10 cm long, and pale cream to off-white in color. Often bruises blue, especially near the base or where handled.
Gills: Dark, mottled charcoal gray to black, closely spaced, and directly attached to the stem. Gills darken noticeably as spores mature.
Spores: Jet black, smooth, and elliptical in shape. Spores mature quickly, often leaving dense prints. Basidia typically produce four spores each (tetrasporic).
Growth Characteristics: Aggressive mycelium that bruises blue naturally. Colonizes and fruits quickly.
Notes: Prefers a slightly cooler environment than most cyanescens, balanced humidity, and consistent airflow.
Potency: Limited data, but psilocybin typically ranges between 2%–4%.
After having read a lot about this variety, I became rather obsessed. Initially, I bought a print from another provider and experienced multiple failures. In a last ditch attempt, I got this print from Whitney. Stunning! I will never go elsewhere again.
Ordered 7 x Prints and all of them were perfectly clean and great to work with. Thank you! Will be back soon to place another order
