Psilocybe Cubensis “Ban Hua Thanon” Spores

Ban Hua Thanon, or BHT for short, comes out of the early 90s ethnomycology expeditions through Southeast Asia. In August 1991, John W. Allen landed on the Thai island of Koh Samui to study how locals used the psychoactive fungi growing there. A few village kids led him out past the fishing village of Ban Hua Thanon to the pastures and rice paddies a couple kilometers west, where water buffalo and Brahman cattle had done the groundwork, with mushrooms coming up straight out of the manure.

He didn’t leave empty handed. That trip produced the genetics behind two now famous strains, the Koh Samui Super Strain and Pink Buffalo. And in the same sandy clay soil, Allen stumbled onto something nobody had catalogued before: a whole new species, later named Psilocybe samuiensis by Guzmán, Bandala, and Allen in 1993.

The cubensis he collected from those pastures turned out tough and easy to grow. Once it reached Western spore vendors it got named Ban Hua Thai (BHT), partly to set it apart from the other Thai lines floating around, partly to tip a hat to the village where the fieldwork happened.

BHT is an exceptionally aggressive variety that colonizes fast, and produces dense flushes of medium to large fruit with golden brown caps.
