While many species fall under the term magic mushrooms, Psilocybe cubensis remains the most widely studied due to its consistent growth patterns, accessibility, and wide range of traits. Its spores are often used to examine taxonomic differences, observe basidial structures, and better understand the reproductive biology of psilocybin containing fungi.
Affectionately termed the “weed of mushrooms” because of how easy it is to grow, Psilocybe cubensis thrives in warm, humid climates. It’s commonly found in dung rich fields and pastures fertilized by livestock throughout tropical and subtropical regions. In nature, it plays an important role in breaking down organic matter, but in the lab, it’s best known for its dramatic morphological variability between strains, rapid evolution under cultivation, and broad spectrum of potency across individual fruits.
