Psilocybe Tampanensis “Pollock” Spore Print

0

Pollock, the OG Psilocybe tampanensis, was discovered in 1977 near Tampa, Florida, by Steven H. Pollock, a physician and mycologist who was attending a mushroom conference in the area. He famously skipped a session to go mushroom hunting that day, and that’s when he found a single fruiting specimen in a sandy meadow he didn’t immediately recognize. He later cloned it, and that culture became the foundation for all tampanensis strains in cultivation today.  The species was formally described in 1978 by Pollock and Mexican mycologist Gastón Guzmán, and the sclerotia it produces became widely known in underground cultivation as philosopher’s stones.

Similar to ATL7, they’re very easy to work with and will produce multiple flushes before tiring out. The most noticeable differences are slightly smaller caps in the early flushes and a lower overall sclerotia yield.

Species: P. tampanensis (aka Tamps, Philosopher’s Stone, Tampa Mushroom)

Strain Origin: near Tampa, FL

Climate: Subtropical. Prefers moderate warmth and humidity.

Habitat: Typically found in sandy soils, grasslands, and meadows, around decaying organic matter.

Temp: 72°–78°F (22–25°C)

Relative Humidity: 90%–95%

Cap: Small caps (1–2.5 cm), convex to bell-shaped, typically deep caramel or burgundy brown when young, fading lighter as they mature (hygrophanous). Easily bruises blue when handled.

Stem: Slender, pale tan to brownish. Often curved and delicate, with clear bluish bruising when handled.

Gills: Closely spaced, dark purplish-brown, adnate or slightly attached to the stem. Gills darken distinctly as spores mature.

Spores: Dark purple-brown, elliptical, and smooth. Basidia are four-spored (tetrasporic). Spores mature quickly, leaving clear dark prints.

Growth Characteristics: Produces sclerotia (aka stones or truffles) in addition to fruit. This variety in particular is known to produce a high yield of sclerotia. Mycelium is fluffy, cottony white, and moderately fast to colonize.

Notes: Very easy to cultivate. Loves moisture, and does best in mild temperatures with gentle air circulation.

Potency: Psilocybin content typically ranges from 0.55%–1%. Sclerotia usually tests slightly lower, around 0.3%–0.7%.
