Transkei (aka South African Transkei or SAT) is one of the few documented strains native to Africa. It was discovered in the early 2000s, growing on dung in the shade of a tree along the coast of South Africa’s Eastern Cape region (formerly known as the Transkei province).
It’s a beautiful variety with rich caramel-colored caps and thick, well proportioned stems. While some phenotypes have been known to appear a bit feral, this line displayed aesthetically pleasing structure and consistency.
Like other mushrooms collected in Africa, Transkei is exceptionally vigorous and resilient, making it easy to work with. Its fruit also shows noticeable differences from cubensis strains found in other parts of the world.
As for its effects, Transkei is often described as energetic and visual, with a clear, euphoric quality that sets it apart from more introspective strains.

Genus: Psilocybe
Species: P. cubensis (aka Cubes, Magic Mushrooms)
Strain Origin: Along the coast of South Africa’s Eastern Cape region, formerly known as the Transkei province.
Climate: Tropical and subtropical
Habitat: Found in nutrient-rich pastures, grasslands, and manure-fertilized soils, often near livestock.
Temp: 74°–80°F (23–27°C)
Relative Humidity: 85%–95%
Cap: Caps are large and rounded, typically starting out golden to reddish caramel and fading to pale tan or cream as they mature (hygrophanous).
Stem: Thick, sturdy stems that are white to pale cream in color. Usually has a persistent, membranous veil (annulus) around the upper portion of the stem. Bruises deep blue when handled.
Gills: Closely spaced and initially pale, turning dark purplish-brown to nearly black as spores mature. Gills are directly attached to the stem or slightly unattached (adnate to adnexed).
Spores: Dark purplish-brown, smooth, and elliptical in shape. Basidia typically produce four spores each (tetrasporic). Spores mature quickly, leaving dense, distinctive dark prints.
Growth Characteristics: Moderately fast growing, with rhizomorphic mycelium that’s typically dense, bright white, and rope-like in appearance. Fruits can vary in size depending on genetics and environmental conditions but usually produce multiple flushes.
Notes: Grows best in environments with stable warmth, high humidity, and consistent fresh air exchange.
Potency: Psilocybin content typically ranges between 0.75%–1.75%.
