The original Psilocybe mexicana collection that led to the “Mex A” and “Mex B” isolations was found growing in pastureland by AirDog, near the skirts of Colima’s Volcano in Mexico. It was later shared with Workman and from it, he isolated two lines:
Somewhere along the line, a tampanensis strain began circulating under the name Mex A. I’m not sure when or how this happened but if you look at Workman’s original photos, you can clearly see it’s Psilocybe mexicana and the variety currently in circulation as Mex A is not.
I’ve read that recent sequencing has confirmed this strain of Mex A is Psilocybe tampanensis, but I haven’t seen it so I can’t personally verify. What I do know though is that it looks and behaves like tampanensis, not mexicana, so I’m updating the name to reflect that.
It also appears to be a distinct tampanensis isolation, as it differs in behavior from other varieties like ATL7, Pollock, and Belluah.
It’s an aggressive fruiter, producing multiple flushes before it starts slowing down. It also produces a generous amount of sclerotia, though stone production is strongest when kept in colonization conditions. Compared to ATL7, which can produce sclerotia and fruit at the same time, Mex A tends to do best when focusing on one or the other. Its stones are generally on the smaller side too.

Genus: Psilocybe
Species: P. tampanensis (aka Tamps, Philosopher’s Stone, Tampa Mushroom)
Strain Origin: Unknown
Climate: Subtropical to temperate. Prefers mild climates with moderate humidity.
Habitat: Found in grassy fields, meadows, and along forest edges, often growing from rich soil with decomposing organic matter.
Temp: 72°–78°F (22–25°C)
Relative Humidity: 90%–95%
Cap: Small to medium-sized (0.5–3 cm), rounded to conical caps that are typically caramel brown, fading to a pale straw or creamy tan as they mature (hygrophanous).
Stem: Thin, slender, and pale cream to brownish in color. Delicate but sturdy. Bruises blue when handled.
Gills: Dark purplish-brown, closely spaced, and attached directly to the stem (adnate). Gills darken noticeably as spores mature.
Spores: Dark purplish-brown, elliptical, and smooth. Basidia are typically four-spored (tetrasporic). Spores mature quickly, leaving clear dark prints.
Growth Characteristics: Moderately fast growing, with delicate white, cottony mycelium. Colonizes grain and substrates quickly and typically produces abundant yields of small fruits.
Notes: Performs best with stable moisture, gentle airflow, and consistent mild temperatures.
Potency: Psilocybin content typically ranges from 0.25%–0.75%. Sclerotia usually tests slightly lower, around 0.2%–0.6%.
I’m completely new to this world, but I still managed to get sclerotia and even mushrooms. I made quite a few mistakes along the way, I only used LC, and now I understand why so many recommend agar… I didn’t even have a pressure cooker… yet the results were good, I am satisfied. Probably beginner’s luck, but next time I will have to be a little more “professional” 🙂
A huge thanks to panaeoluscoop (Whitney) for the amazing support and kindness!!!
(P.S. the sclerotia in the photo looks wet because I washed it… I dried it right after)
